ADMISSIONS...

The Brooklyn Free School is now in its eighth year and is growing. This is an historic occasion for Brooklyn and New York City as we have continued the tradition of democratic education begun by the Summerhill School in 1921 and maintained by Sudbury Valley School and The Albany Free School, both open since the late '60's.

We now have over 60 students, six advisors, and several interns, consultants and volunteers, many of them parents. If you are interested in enrolling your 4 to 14 year-old children, please follow the admissions process below.

I look forward to hearing from you and moving on to the next stage in the growth of the learning community of Brooklyn Free School!

Founder and Director

FALL OPEN HOUSE:

Wednesday, Nov 14, from 6pm-7:30pm

No RSVP required. For more information, please email: bfsadmissions@gmail.com or call 718-499-2707.

Admissions Process:

Step One: Get in touch

E-mail bfsadmissions@gmail.com or call 718-499-2707

Step Two: Tour

Come in for a tour of the school during the school day. Tours are usually offered by appointment on Thursday mornings at 10am. There will also be two fall open houses and one spring open house offered in the evening for those who can't make the school day tour.

Step Three: Apply

Complete an application available on the tour or online. If you are interested in tuition assistance, file for FACTS or equivalent tuition management system. Twice a year, our admissions coordinator evaluates applications in our wait pool based on a weighted criteria rubric. Our rubric is adjusted each year according to a breakdown of our returning student body and is used to determine if we have the space and resources to consider your application for the next step.

Step Four: Interview

We invite families to sit with our admissions coordinator and staff members to discuss what being a part of BFS is like. This is a chance to ask questions and get to know the school better so that you and our staff can determine if it seems like a good fit.

Step Five: Visit

If the staff and your family have determined that the school is a good fit, a trial week is scheduled so that the student can spend time with the entire school community. At the end of the week, families are invited to schedule a commitment meeting.

Step Six: Commitment Meeting

The commitment meeting is the final step in admissions at Brooklyn Free School. During this meeting, families evaluate the week visit with our admissions coordinator and if enrollment is offered, fill out tuition and philosophical contracts. Doing so enrolls the student for the following year.
